Pele’s Biography
For younger generations, Brazilian soccer is mostly seen as the same thing with greatness. Largely due to the national team’s remarkable performances in the World Cups of the 1990s.
For many, this success feels like the natural order of things, as Brazil’s dominance on the global stage has long been an integral part of soccer history.
However, the legend of Brazilian soccer began long before this era, during a time when soccer was becoming a global phenomenon.
Many attribute the internationalization of the sport to the Brazilian team of the 1950s, which was spearheaded by one of the most iconic figures in sports history:
The legendary Pelé. Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, Pelé rose from humble beginnings in a poor Brazilian family to become one of the most celebrated athletes in modern history.
His father, a footballer for Fluminense, influenced his early passion for the game, making it almost inevitable that Pelé would follow in his footsteps.

Growing up in poverty, Pelé could not afford proper soccer gear or even a real soccer ball. To play, he and his friends would stuff newspapers into socks, tying them up to create makeshift balls.
Despite these hardships, Pelé’s talent shone early. Forming a team with his neighbors, they entered youth tournaments where they earned the nickname “the shoeless ones” because none of the players could afford to wear shoes while competing.
Later, the team saved enough money to purchase footwear and renamed themselves Ameriquinha. Participating in numerous local tournaments. Pelé quickly established himself as a prolific scorer, often finishing as the top goal-scorer in these competitions.
At just 15 years old, Pelé’s exceptional talent caught the attention of one of Brazil’s top clubs. Santos FC, which offered him a contract.

However, it was in the final against Sweden that Pelé truly etched his name in history. He scored a stunning goal by lobbing the ball over a defender and volleying it into the net, helping Brazil secure the victory.
Overwhelmed with emotion, the young Pelé fainted on the field after the match and required medical attention.

Throughout his career, Pelé participated in three more World Cups, winning the titles in 1962 and 1970. He became the first player to score in four different World Cups and, in 1970, reached a monumental milestone: scoring 1,000 official goals for club and country.
Some critics argue that the game was way more less defensive and tactical during his era. But we cant argue that his contributions to soccer cannot be overstated.
He was a central figure in the sport’s global rise from the mid-1950s to the late 1970s.
