The world’s oldest football league, founded in 1888, initially comprised 12 clubs from the Midlands and northern England.
At the time, the league was not called the “English League” as there were hopes of including Scottish clubs. However, by 1890, Scottish teams had established their own league.
Meanwhile, the FA Cup, which began in 1872, had already gained prominence and included Scottish and southern “non-league” teams.
A second division was introduced in 1892 when the league merged with its rival, the Football Alliance, increasing its membership. By 1899, the league had grown to 36 clubs.
Initially, the bottom four clubs had to apply for re-election each season. This rule was revised over the years, reducing the number to three clubs in 1895/96 and then to two by 1898/99, before reverting to four in 1920/21 when the league expanded further.
Between 1893 and 1898, promotion between the two divisions was decided through “test matches,” an early version of today’s playoffs.
The league paused during World War I (1915–1919) but resumed with 40 clubs in 1919. To address its northern and Midlands-centric structure.
Most of the rival Southern League’s First Division teams were absorbed in 1920 to form the Football League’s Third Division. A year later, more clubs from the Midlands and North joined, leading to the creation of two regional Third Divisions—North and South.

The Second World War (1940–1946) caused another temporary halt to the league. When football resumed, the league continued to expand. In 1958, Division Four was introduced, creating a four-tier system.
By 1959, the league expanded further to include 92 clubs. The introduction of the League Cup in 1960 marked another milestone in its development.
Over time, this historic league laid the foundation for professional football, evolving to accommodate regional diversity and competitive formats. Despite pauses during wartime, its structure adapted and expanded, becoming a cornerstone of English football.
